From Cold Showers to 5 AM Karaoke
The modern world is one big distraction fest. Just when you’re about to tackle that big project, bam - you find yourself in a rabbit hole of cat and warthog/kasongo memes or life hacks that require a lifetime of preparation. And suddenly, another day’s productivity is lost.

Viral ‘kasongo’ memes
But what if the secret to productivity isn’t about doing more, but about doing things differently?
What if those strange routines we tend to side-eye could actually unlock focus, creativity, and energy?
Let’s explore the world of unconventional productivity hacks - why people swear by them, and how they just might be the little extra you have been missing!
Cold Showers
Cold showers - and not just on hot summer days. Some entrepreneurs swear by them as a wake-up ritual.
Cold exposure kicks up dopamine levels, boosts metabolism, and apparently enhances willpower (because let’s be real, anyone who starts their day with icy water has grit).
What is the science? Cold showers can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve circulation, lower stress levels, and reduce muscle soreness and fatigue. And it doesn't stop there!
When exposed to cold, it forces a quick shift in mindset, pulling you right into the present. If you’re feeling sluggish, a cold shower might be the low-cost, high-impact boost you need.
The 5 AM Karaoke Kickstart
Most people kick off their morning with coffee; some prefer blasting their favourite tune at top volume. Yes, we’re talking karaoke - but before dawn.
I know this doesn’t sound like a typical routine of an African man - more reason it is on our weird list.
Karaoke is not just for fun: singing gets the blood pumping, wakes up the mind, and might even help conquer that inner critic, especially when you’re belting out empowering tunes.
How It Works: Singing releases oxytocin, lifting your mood and building self-confidence. And a positive mindset first thing in the morning can set a productive tone for the day. If this might help you enter “beast mode” before the sun is up, why not give it a shot?
Weird Dietary Hacks
Some entrepreneurs skip breakfast in favour of “Bulletproof Coffee” - a blend of coffee, butter, and MCT oil, popularized by biohackers aiming to boost focus and stamina. Others swear by intermittent fasting, and some by protein shakes with surprising ingredients like mushroom powder or algae.

Does it work? The Bulletproof Coffee combination provides fats for longer-lasting energy and fewer blood sugar dips. Intermittent fasting gives the body time to reset, aiding in sustained concentration. While these diets aren’t one-size-fits-all, they may work if you’re looking for stable energy and mental clarity.
Power Naps, or “Strategic Napping”
A short nap - often rebranded as a “power nap” in the productivity world - can work wonders, as it allows your brain to reset.
I know to most Africans, especially those like me with a strong rural upbringing the whole power napping thing has laziness written all over it! But this might not be the case at all.
The key is timing. Around 15-20 minutes is ideal, enough to restore alertness without going into deep sleep cycles. Some even advocate for the “coffee nap” - drinking coffee just before a short nap, so you wake up as the caffeine kicks in.
Myth or Fact? A brief nap prevents burnout and enhances cognitive function, while caffeine afterwards can prevent post-nap grogginess. If timed right, a power nap can leave you refreshed and ready to tackle complex tasks in the afternoon.
Gratitude Journaling
Gratitude journaling involves writing down what you’re thankful for - something as simple as enjoying a great cup of coffee or finishing a small task. This might seem touchy-feely, but studies show that cultivating gratitude can improve resilience and well-being.
It goes beyond religion! Reflecting on positive aspects of your day encourages a mindset shift toward optimism, helping you focus on progress over perfection. Building a small habit of gratitude can motivate you through tough times and keep you grounded in purpose, which is crucial for sustainable productivity.
The Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro Technique is a classic, but it’s worth mentioning for its simplicity and effectiveness.
The method is as easy as 123: set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-minute break. After four “Pomodoros,” take a longer break. This structure works with your brain’s natural concentration cycles, making it easier to avoid burnout.

The technique trains your mind to focus in short, intense bursts, which can be more productive than long, uninterrupted hours. The short breaks also give your brain time to recharge, helping sustain concentration over extended periods.
Walking Meetings and Brainstorm Breaks
Steve Jobs was known for his walking meetings, and for a good reason. Movement increases blood flow to the brain, sparking creativity and helping solve problems in ways that sitting might not.
Walking lowers stress hormones and increases endorphins. It can also break up mental blocks, giving your mind a fresh angle on problems. Walking meetings or mid-day strolls might become the mental reset that traditional desk work doesn’t allow.
Digital Detox Days
With work and life blending on our screens, it’s no surprise that taking a tech break can recharge our focus. Some entrepreneurs enforce “tech-free” evenings or whole days without screens to refresh their minds.
This is essential for quality family time too.
A digital detox can lower stress, improve sleep, and reduce eye strain. Stepping away from screens gives you space to reset, making it easier to focus when you’re back at work.
Practicing Mindfulness
Mindfulness doesn’t require hours of meditation. A minute or two of deep breathing or a few minutes of meditation can be enough to reset during a busy day.
Deep breathing calms the nervous system, reduces stress, and helps centre your thoughts. Mindfulness helps you regain focus, especially during busy or overwhelming days, by anchoring your attention in the present moment.
The Bottom Line
Productivity is as unique as we are. Cold showers or 5 AM karaoke might not work for everyone, but experimenting with these unconventional hacks could surprise you.
Explore, adapt, and don’t be afraid to get a little weird with your routines. Who knows? That strange habit might just hold the key to unlocking your best, most productive self.

Book of The Month
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

I get goosebumps whenever I mention this Napoleon Hill classic. Think and Grow Rich was the first motivational book I read, and 20 years later, it’s still a favourite. Here’s a breakdown of some of the best insights from the book:
The Power of Desire
A clear, burning desire is the first step to achieving wealth and success. This isn’t just a wish or hope - it’s an all-consuming drive. Desire is the “starting point of all achievement.” Define your goals with specificity and clarity. Create a vision that motivates you to take action.
Have Faith and Belief in Your Abilities
Faith is described as a mental state that must be continuously cultivated. By visualizing and believing in the achievement of your goals, you build confidence and turn desire into reality. Act as if you’ve already achieved your goals, building belief in yourself to conquer doubts and fears.
The Role of Autosuggestion
Train your subconscious mind by repeatedly affirming your goals and desires.
Use affirmations and visualize your success daily to reprogram your mind and stay focused on your goals.
Specialized Knowledge
Hill makes a clear distinction between general knowledge and specialized knowledge. Only the latter helps in achieving success, as it can be directly applied to solve problems and generate income. Invest in learning skills specific to your industry or goals. Become an expert rather than a generalist.
Imagination as a Tool for Success
Imagination is what transforms ideas into action. Hill talks about two types of imagination - synthetic (building on existing ideas) and creative (original, unique ideas). Cultivate your imagination by thinking creatively about solutions and opportunities, and keep an open mind.
Organized Planning
Success comes from well-structured plans. Hill advises putting your plans in writing and being flexible enough to change them as necessary. Write a detailed, actionable plan for your goals and create steps to follow. Regularly review and adapt it as you progress.
Decision-Making
Successful people make decisions quickly and change them slowly, if at all. Indecisiveness is seen as a major roadblock. Practice making swift, confident decisions. Trust your judgment, and commit to seeing your decisions through.
Persistence
Hill argues that persistence is essential to success. Without persistence, even the best ideas and plans will fail. Stick with your goals, even when you face obstacles. Recognize that persistence is the bridge between desire and success.
The Power of the Mastermind
Hill introduces the concept of a mastermind, a group of like-minded people who support each other’s goals. He suggests that a mastermind group can provide insights, accountability, and encouragement. Surround yourself with a network of ambitious individuals to help you stay inspired, share ideas, and overcome challenges.
The Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind records all thoughts and emotions, and ultimately, it influences our actions. Control the input to your subconscious by focusing on positive, empowering thoughts, and avoiding negativity.
The Sixth Sense and Intuition
According to Hill, the “sixth sense” is a form of intuition that helps guide your decisions and actions. This comes with practice and develops as you tune into your subconscious. Cultivate your intuition by learning to trust and listen to it, especially in decision-making.

Culture
Writing this section does come with its set of advantages. As much as we explore our identity, burst stereotypes and celebrate African cultures, I also get to learn more about my roots. Today we are exploring my culture!
Ndebele Culture
The Ndebele are a Southern African tribe known for their vibrant culture, which includes colourful clothing, decorative homes, and geometric art. There are three groups of Ndebele people: the Northern Ndebele, Southern Ndebele, and Ndebele of Zimbabwe.
Clothing: Ndebele women wear colourful skirts, beaded jewellery, and headpieces, while men often wear caps and blankets with beading.
Home decor: Ndebele women paint the interior and exterior walls of their homes with geometric designs in bright colours. The colours used in Ndebele art have symbolic meanings, such as green for contentment and blue for harmony.
Language: The Ndebele language, isiNdebele, is one of the official languages of South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Art: Ndebele art is known for its colourful, geometric patterns and has inspired artists around the world.
Traditions: The Ndebele practice traditional beliefs and coming-of-age ceremonies.
Ornaments: Ndebele women wear ornaments that symbolize their status in the community.
Craftsmanship: The Ndebele are known for their outstanding craftsmanship.

Inside Africa
The fabric of Southern Africa, once woven with the threads of liberation movements, is showing signs of cracking. Botswana, long lauded for its political stability and economic prosperity, has witnessed a seismic shift, with the ruling party facing an unprecedented electoral rebuke after nearly six decades in power. This unexpected outcome sends ripples through the region, raising questions about the future of the long-standing political order.
Meanwhile, across the border in Mozambique, the aftermath of last month's disputed elections has ignited unrest, casting a shadow on the country's fragile stability. The echoes of these events, though geographically distinct, speak to a broader sense of unease, challenging the perception of Southern Africa as a region of unyielding political resilience.
However, amidst these political tremors, it's crucial to remember that the continent's vibrant culture and natural beauty remain undimmed. The rich tapestry of Africa extends far beyond political headlines!
In this section, we are all about the beauty of Africa!
Escape to Paradise: Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique
To think that I spent my entire life as a neighbour to Mozambique, yet remained oblivious to the paradise that is Bazaruto, is shameful.

This archipelago, comprised of five glittering islands nestled within Africa's largest marine reserve, offers a taste of paradise that will leave you utterly rejuvenated.
Imagine pristine white sands stretching out before you, impossibly blue waters sparkling under the sun, and a sense of peace that washes over you as soon as you set foot on the islands. Bazaruto Archipelago is the ultimate escape, where luxury meets nature in perfect harmony.
With vibrant coral reefs teeming with over 2000 fish species, whales and dolphins, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to world-class snorkelling and diving. Whether you're a seasoned scuba diver or a first-timer, the underwater world here will captivate you.
Forget the rush of everyday life, here, time moves to the slow rhythm of the islands. Sunbathe on deserted beaches, go for leisurely strolls along the shore, and enjoy delicious seafood feasts under a starlit sky.
Bazaruto Archipelago is the perfect choice for a honeymoon, a family getaway, or simply a chance to reconnect with nature and yourself. It's a destination that will stay with you long after you leave, reminding you of the beauty and serenity of the natural world.
